We laughed when we heard that an Australian politician painted over a mural as part of an anti-graffiti stunt.
Apparently, the politician spent four hours removing what he claimed was graffiti. But the stunt backfired when it was revealed that the mural was not illegal graffiti but an artwork paid for by a local sporting club.
After taking a closer look at the subject ourselves, it is obvious that graffiti is a confusing topic with lots of passion on both sides!
On the one hand, you've got cities spending huge sums to remove graffiti. On the other, you've got the same cities paying graffiti artists to do works. Like we said, confusing!
For us, graffiti IS art, there is no question. It embodies the passion, the struggle and the risk free-thinkers everywhere take to express themselves and the art form is constantly evolving as the urban environment and social issues change.
In short, if you have the money, you can advertise anything in the city and established artists can exhibit in galleries.
But, what if you've got a voice and need to be heard at the top of your lungs. What if you've got billboard sized energy and emotions, but without the billboard-sized chequebook! That's why graffiti artists use the street as their gallery. A pent-up desire to be heard, to be seen by the masses, makes a can of spray paint their only medium of expression. It's not always pretty, but as with anything, we can celebrate the good in it!
This graffiti tee, celebrates graffiti as the art form it is. From the artists or "writers" of the 70's in New York city that painted whole train carriages with astounding colours, to the taggers in LA that paint "heavens" - the huge commercial billboards lining LA's freeways - to the latest evolution, the stencillers, a graffiti form invented to reduce the amount of time it takes to do a work (so as not to get caught!).
Like t shirts, graffiti is a form of expresssion. It is also a form of rebellon and for those who participate in it, there is a sense of belonging - once again, just like wearing t shirts!
Have fun!
